SOIL EROSION RISK ASSESSMENT IN ARID MEDITERRANEAN REGIONS USING GIS AND THE MEDALUS MODEL: THE SOUBELLA SUB-CATCHMENT, ALGERIA
This study investigates soil erosion and land degradation in the Soubella sub-watershed of the Hodna region, Algeria, an area shaped by dryland climatic conditions ranging from semi-arid to arid. To evaluate erosion risk, the MEDALUS (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use) model was combined with GIS-based spatial analysis. Soil erosion represents a critical environmental challenge in water-limited regions, where harsh climate and human pressures intensify land degradation. The methodological approach relied on four indices: Soil Quality (SQI), Climate Quality (CQI), Vegetation Quality (VQI), and Anthropogenic Quality (AQI). These indicators were derived from remote sensing data, GIS tools, and field surveys, offering an integrated framework for assessing ecosystem vulnerability. The sub-watershed spans 1,837.33 km², with elevations ranging from 376 to 1,871 m and an average slope of 19.02 m/km, indicating moderately rugged terrain. The semi-arid climate is characterized by high temperatures, scarce and irregular rainfall, and significant variability. At the Soubella dam site, the mean annual rainfall is only 289 mm, highlighting the climatic stress on soil and vegetation. The erosion sensitivity map revealed three categories: non-affected areas (27.5%), sensitive areas (16.1%), and highly sensitive areas (56.4%). This pattern illustrates the combined influence of climate, relief, vegetation cover, and land use in driving erosion dynamics. The findings highlight the predominance of highly sensitive zones, underlining the fragility of dryland ecosystems and the need for preventive measures. By identifying erosion-prone sectors, the research provides essential guidance for decision-makers to implement sustainable land management strategies that mitigate erosion risks and enhance resilience in the Hodna region.

Desertification Vulnerability in Arid Mediterranean Ecosystems: A Case Study of the Boussaada Sub-Basin, (Southwest Hodna, Algeria).
Desertification represents a pressing global concern, with Algeria facing significant challenges in this regard. The Hodna region is undergoing rapid landscape transformation due to Desertification. Protecting against desertification and improving the living conditions of dependent populations have become national priorities in Algeria. The aim of this study is to assess desertification sensitivity, develop a set of thematic maps (including vegetation quality, soil quality, etc.), and established GIS-based of the study area using Geographic Information System (GIS) based on the MEDALUS (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use) approach. The Desertification Sensitivity Index (DSI) is derived by integrating four primary indicators: Soil Quality Index (SQI), Climate Quality Index (CQI), Vegetation Quality Index (VQI), and Anthropogenic Quality Index (AQI). The analysis of the desertification sensitivity map for the Boussaada sub-basin identified five distinct zones: highly sensitive, sensitive, moderately sensitive, less sensitive, and non-sensitive. The findings reveal that 76% of the Boussaada area is categorized as sensitive to highly sensitive to desertification. This region is defined as a pre desert zone, characterized by an arid climate with scarce and erratic rainfall, alongside inadequate land management practices.

Contribution of GIS to mapping sensitivity to sand encroachment in the Boussaada sub basin (South-west of Hodna, Algeria) using the MEDALUS approach.
Desertification is a critical issue of our time, posing an immediate challenge to Algeria. The Hodna region is undergoing rapid landscape transformation due to sand encroachment. Protecting against desertification and improving the living conditions of dependent populations have become national priorities in Algeria. The aim of this study is to assess desertification sensitivity, develop a set of thematic maps (such as vegetation quality map, soil quality map, etc.), and create a database (DB) of the study area using Geographic Information System (GIS) based on the MEDALUS (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use) approach. The Desertification Sensitivity Index (DSI) is mapped by combining four major indicators: Soil Quality Index (SQI), Climate Quality Index (CQI), Vegetation Quality Index (VQI), and Anthropogenic Quality Index (AQI). Analysis of the desertification sensitivity map of the Boussaada sub-basin identified five zones: very sensitive, sensitive, moderately sensitive, less sensitive, and non-sensitive. The map shows that three-quarters of the Boussaada sub-basin, totaling 76%, are classified as sensitive to very sensitive to desertification. The area is characterized as pre-desert due to its arid climate with low and irregular precipitation, as well as poor land management practices. Keywords: Desertification. Database. Climate aride. Use of GIS for mapping sensitivity to erosion using the MEDALUS approach: Application in the Boussaada sub- watershed, Algeria.
The sub-watershed of the Oued Bousaâda, covering an area of 2938.36 km², is part of the Hodna watershed, located southwest of Hodna in the high plateaus, and it is characterized by a semi-arid climate and the precipitation is highly irregular. These rains are associated with high variability. Soil erosion poses a serious environmental, agricultural, and social problem that affects and threatens this region. It is necessary to identify the most erosion-sensitive areas in this sub-watershed in order to determine priorities for mitigation actions. The objective of this study is to assess soil vulnerability to water erosion, develop a set of thematic maps (Vegetation Quality Map, Soil Quality Map, etc.), and create a database (DB) using an approach based on the MEDALUS (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use) model and Geographic Information System (GIS). This mapping model is a tool intended to assist decision-makers in better managing water and soil resources, taking into account the expectations and needs of the rural population. By combining remote sensing with the analysis of factors known to affect the erosion process, such as climate, vegetation, soil, and demographics, a erosion sensitivity map has been created. The erosion risk mapping revealed that more than 75 % of the studied area showed high vulnerability to erosion. This map will be an essential tool for the socio-economic infrastructures of the region.

Étude et analyse de l’état de l’espace pastoral dans la région de M’sila (Algérie).
L'état des parcours steppiques de la région de M'Sila subit de profonds changements que nous avons étudiés en nous concentrant sur la caractérisation et la forte transition des systèmes d'élevage ovin de cette région. Nous avons mené des entretiens des agriculteurs, répartis sur quelque zones potentiellement pastorales de la steppe algérienne (pluviométrie comprise entre 100 et plus de 350 mm/an) autour de M'Sila.

Apport d'un SIG pour l’étude de la gestion des ressources en eau de la région de Msila - Algérie./Contribution of a GIS for the study of water resources management in the Msila region - Algeria.
L’eau est indissociable á l’activité humaine. Il est la plus vitale au même titre que l’air. Elle est indispensable á la survie des êtres vivants. C’est une ressource porteuse de beaucoup de spécificités, à la fois abondante et rare. La gestion des ressources en eau en Algérie évolue en ordre politique, social, économique, culturel et environnemental qui entrave fortement sa mise en œuvre. Dans cette étude on va discuter l'utilisation et l'exploitation des techniques des Systèmes d'Information Géographique (SIG) pour l'étude de la gestion des ressources en eaux dans la région de M’sila à travers la réalisation d'une base de données thématiques et spatiales. Les avantages des S.I.G sont multiples surtout dans le domaine de planification et de gestion des ressources naturelles tel que l’eau. Ils offrent la possibilité de description des organisations spatiales suivant des modèles qui peuvent évoluer avec les progrès des connaissances. Ils favorisent aussi la mise à jour des données, les changements d’échelles et la restitution des cartes thématiques. La région de M’sila apparaît comme un cas d’étude exemplaire des difficultés que pose la problématique du « système eau » et répond à notre avis à ce souci d’analyse d’un espace qui présente la triple caractéristique de consommation industrielle importante, de consommation ménagère en expansion et de besoins agricoles appelés forcement à augmenter, vu la nécessité, à moyen terme, d’une intensification agricole.
