Continental Aquaculture in Algeria (Regions of El Oued): Socio-Economic and Environmental Impacts
Abstract Continental aquaculture is an important economic activity in southern Algeria. The four farms visited in Tougourt produce significant quantities of fish, including tilapias, with values ranging from 150 kg to 6 tonnes, through semi-intensive production systems. The farms are operated by owners aged between 40 and 50 years, with a background in aquaculture or engineering, and have between 2 and 8 years of experience in breeding ornamental and food fish. The farms occupy surfaces of 1.5 to 2 hectares and are not self-sufficient in terms of food resources. They do not receive subsidies, except for the sixth farm. However, the farms occasionally benefit from state agency dissemination. The impacts of continental aquaculture on local communities are varied, including job creation, improved living conditions, and contribution to food security. Continental aquaculture in Algeria has also had an impact on employment and labor in aquaculture farms, as well as on trade and supply chains. The studied socio-economic impacts include job creation, skills development, innovation promotion, modification of relations with suppliers and customers, and impact on food prices and availability. In summary, continental aquaculture in Algeria has positive socio-economic impacts, such as job creation and innovation promotion. However, it is also important to consider the implications for sustainable development, particularly in terms of environmentalism and social sustainability.

Continental Aquaculture in Algeria (Aïn Defla Region): Analysis of Production Performance, Constraints, and Socio-Economic Impacts
Continental aquaculture in Algeria is a booming sector that contributes to global, regional and local food security. The aim of this study was to analyse the rearing conditions, production performance and constraints of seven farms located in the Aïn Defla region. The results of the study show that the farms in Aïn Defla have variable production performances, with production rates ranging from 0.0804 kg/m3 to 5.5788 kg/m3, and total productions varying between 240 kg and 5,000 kg, with an average mortality rate observed. The professional constraints identified in the study area include difficulties in managing farming economically, preserving the environment, a lack of exchange and support from aquaculture specialists, and a significant shortage of specific pharmaceutical products for fish. Major efforts appear to be needed to improve the sustainability and profitability of aquaculture in the region. In addition, inland aquaculture in Algeria has also had an impact on employment and labour on aquaculture farms, as well as on supply chains and trade. The socio-economic impacts studied include job creation, skills development, promotion of innovation, changes in relationships with suppliers and customers, and impacts on food prices and availability. Continental aquaculture in Algeria has positive socio-economic impacts, such as job creation and the promotion of innovation. However, it is also important to consider the implications for sustainable development, particularly with regard to the environment and social sustainability.

Comparative Analysis of Aquaculture Production Performance in the Regions of M'sila and Aïn Defla, Algeria
Aquaculture, the fastest growing food supply sector globally, plays a crucial role in global, regional, and local food security. The present study focuses on analysing and evaluating the breeding conditions, production performances, and the constraints of selected farms in the governorates of M’sila and Aïn Defla (Algeria). Thus, cross-sectional surveys were conducted through questionnaires and interviews with farm managers. As results, in M’sila governorate the farms : M’sila 1, M’sila 2, and M’sila 3 have varying volumes of aquaculture ponds and average weight of fish. However, due to the lack of rating from aquaculturists there are missing values in total production and mortality rate for the farms M’sila1 and M’sila 2. The farm M’sila 3 has a production rate of 1.7857 Kg/m3, with a total annual production of 3000 Kg after being started with 12000 of fish fry. While, in Aïn Defla governorate, the seven farms (Aïn Defla1 to Aïn Defla 7) have complete data with varying total volumes of ponds, production rate, total production, average weight of fish, mortality rate, and number of fish fry. The production rates range from 0.0804 Kg/m3 (Aïn Defla 1) to 5.5788/m3 (Aïn Defla 2). The total production ranges from 240 Kg (Aïn Defla 5) to 5000 Kg (Aïn Defla 1). The highest mortality rate was 50% (Aïn Defla 3). Comparatively, Aïn Defla farms have a higher production performances per m3 than M’sila farms. The lowest mortality rate was observed in M’sila 2. This comparative analysis provides insights into farm efficiency. Professional constraints identified in the study area include difficulties in economical management and preservation of the breeding environment, a lack of dissemination and support by aquaculture specialists, and a significant deficit in fish-specific drugs and vaccines. Considerable efforts appear necessary to improve the sustainability and profitability of aquaculture in the regions of M’sila and Aïn Defla. These conclusions are essential to guide the decisions of sector stakeholders and researchers regarding the future development of the aquaculture sector in Algeria.
