Rapid urbanization and its impact on the environment and the climate place the city at the center of the priorities, which leads to an acceleration in taking into account the requirements of sustainable development. The concept of sustainable development has become popular following the emergence of environmental agreements calling for the ecological dimension to be integrated into the economic development process. There are many ways to take a sustainable development approach to an urban area, and the theme of a sustainable and ecological city is gaining in importance.
The subject of our article focuses on the ecological dimension of the city of Ain Smara in Constantine through an urban analysis based on a questionnaire distributed among the citizens of the city, and this according to the environmental dimension, one of the three pillars of sustainable development. The aim of this article is to integrate new techniques linked to the criteria of ecological cities into the management of the city, which should structure the natural and urban environment of ‘Ain Smara’. Next, we will try to make proposals and recommendations in order to find viable solutions to the various environmental problems suffered by the citizens of this city, and to emerge with a new image of an ecological and sustainable city.
If “Ain Smara” becomes an ecological city, well equipped, close to everything, with more nature, less nuisance, a city whose transport networks are efficient and non-polluting and energy are
managed in an optimal and economical way, a city where civil society has its voice... in a word, a more pleasant city! Who wants to live in a city like this?
