Otospermum glabrum extracts: antioxidant properties and bioactivity against fungal pathogens and Aphis fabae
The adoption of plant-based biopesticides as sustainable alternatives to synthetic chemicals in agricultural pest management has gained increasing attention due to their safety and ecological benefits. Many of these natural compounds demonstrate potent antifungal activity, mitigating foodborne fungal contamination and associated mycotoxins. This study evaluated the antioxidant, antifungal, and aphicidal potential of Otospermum glabrum (Asteraceae) extracts derived from its aerial parts. Three extracts −ethyl acetate, methanolic, and aqueous− were assessed for total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant activity (DPPH radical scavenging, β-carotene bleaching, and total antioxidant capacity), antifungal effects against six post-harvest and crop fungal pathogens, and aphicidal activity against the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae Scop.). The ethyl acetate extract (EaE) exhibited the highest polyphenols (57.60 ± 0.17 μg GAE/mg) and flavonoids (49.46 ± 0.66 μg QE/mg), while the methanolic extract (ME) demonstrated the strongest DPPH scavenging activity (IC₅₀ = 56.05 ± 0.03 µg/ml) and β-carotene bleaching inhibition, comparable to BHT. The aqueous and ethyl acetate extracts showed the highest total antioxidant capacity (252.60 ± 0.20 and 249.10 ± 0.81 µg AAE/mg, respectively). Antifungal assays revealed that ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts were the most effective, with inhibition percentages (IP) exceeding 65% against all tested fungi. Additionally, the methanolic extract at 30% concentration induced 100% mortality in A. fabae after 72 h and exhibited significant repellency (48.98 ± 8.76%). These findings highlight O. glabrum as a promising source of natural biopesticides for integrated pest management.

Nanoemulsion of Satureja battandieri L. Briq essential oil: antioxidant and biological activities for food preservation
This study investigates the formulation, stability, and multifunctional bioactivity of Satureja battandieri essential oil-based nanoemulsions (SbEO-NE), highlighting their enhanced antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti- inflammatory and toxicity profiles compared to pure SbEO. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis identified thymol (45.49 %) and carvacrol (30.11 %) as the predominant constituents, both known for their potent bioactivities. Nanoemulsions were prepared using high-energy ultrasonication with three different concentrations of Tween 80 “1 %, 2 %, and 3 %“, with 2 % providing optimal colloidal stability and submicron droplet size (PDI <0.3). In vitro assays demonstrated that SbEO-NE exhibited superior antimicrobial efficacy compared to pure SbEO, with a stronger inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum spore germination was observed (delayed by 64.2 h at 1.3 mg/mL) and significantly lower minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) against Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenese. Antioxidant activity, assessed by DPPH assay, was notably higher in SbEO-NE, likely due to improved dispersibility and bioavailability of phenolic compounds. In vivo anti- inflammatory effects, evaluated using a xylene-induced ear edema model in mice, showed that SbEO-NE reduced edema by 64 %, compared to 32 % with pure SbEO, indicating enhanced therapeutic potential. Acute oral toxicity assessments revealed no adverse effects, supporting the safety of SbEO-NE for potential food applications. These findings suggest that nanoemulsification significantly enhances the bioactive properties and stability of SbEO, positioning SbEO-NE as a promising natural alternative to synthetic additives in food preservation and bioactive food packaging, with assured biocompatibility and consumer safety.

Efficacité de l 'Huile d 'Artemisia Herba Alba Asso contre les Champignons des Cultures
Description du sujet : L'étude évalue l'efficacité des huiles essentielles comme alternative naturelle aux fongicides chimiques pour protéger les plantes alimentaires. Objectifs : Étudier l'efficacité des huiles essentielles comme alternative naturelle aux fongicides chimiques pour protéger les cultures agricoles, qui sont l'une des principales sources alimentaires pour l'humanité. Méthode : Des isolats fongiques phytopathogènes ont été obtenus de l'École Normale Supérieure de Kouba à partir de tomates, de blé et de palmiers. La croissance radiale a été mesurée dans des boîtes de Pétri (5 cm) pour évaluer l'efficacité de l'huile essentielle d'Artemisia herba alba Asso avec de l'agar. Un disque fongique (5 mm) a été placé au centre de la plaque et incubé dans l'obscurité pendant 7 jours à 30 °C. Le taux d'inhibition d'inhibition (%) = [(diamètre fongique dans l'échantillon témoin – diamètre fongique dans l'échantillon traité) / diamètre fongique dans l'échantillon témoin] × 100. Résultats et discussion L'huile essentielle d'Artemesia herba alba Asso a montré une efficacité élevée contre les trois espèces fongiques étudiées. Le taux d'inhibition était de 84,74 % contre le champignon Fusarium oxysporum f. sp albedinis, de 73,53 % contre le penicilium glabrum, et une efficacité d'inhibition de 77,47 % contre le Aspergillus parasiticus. L'efficacité des huiles essentielles est due à leur impact sur les filaments fongiques, provoquant un désordre de la membrane cellulaire et la sortie du cytoplasme, ce qui entraîne l'effondrement et la mort des champignons. Conclusion : Cette étude prouve l'efficacité de l'huile essentielle d'Artemesia herba alba Asso comme alternative naturelle aux fongicides chimiques, favorisant une agriculture durable Mots clés : Fusarium oxysporum f. sp albedinis ; Penicillium glabrum, Aspergillus Parasiticus ; fongicides ; Agricoles ; plantes alimentaires

Lipid oxidation inhibition capacity of Asperula hirsuta extracts
Description of the subject: Lipid oxidation in food leads to rancidity and nutritional losses, posing significant challenges to food quality and safety. Natural antioxidants offer a promising alternative to synthetic additives for mitigating this issue. This study investigates the lipid oxidation inhibition capacity of methanolic and aqueous extracts of Asperula hirsuta, a plant traditionally known for its potential antioxidant properties. Objectives: The primary objective was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of methanolic and aqueous extracts of Asperula hirsuta in inhibiting lipid oxidation, specifically using the β-carotene bleaching assay. Method: Methanolic and aqueous extracts of Asperula hirsuta were prepared and their antioxidant activity were evaluated using the β-carotene bleaching method. This assay measures the ability of the extracts to inhibit the oxidation of β-carotene, which serves as a model for lipid oxidation. The antioxidant capacity was quantified by monitoring the bleaching of β-carotene over time in the presence and absence of the plant extracts, and the results were compared to synthetic antioxidants (BHT) for reference. Results and discussion: Both methanolic and aqueous extracts of Asperula hirsuta (2 mg/mL) demonstrated significant lipid oxidation inhibition activity with 61% and 66%, respectively. This activity was less than that obtained with BHT (98%), used as a standard. The observed inhibition is likely due to the presence of electron-donating constituents, such as phenolic compounds, known to be abundant in Asperula species. These compounds effectively neutralize free radicals, thereby hindering lipid peroxidation. Conclusion: This study highlights the potential of Asperula hirsuta extracts as a natural antioxidant source for inhibiting lipid oxidation in food. The results suggest that Asperula hirsuta could be a valuable natural alternative to synthetic antioxidants in preserving food quality and extending shelf life. FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING, REDUCING POWER AND TOTAL PHENOLIC CONTENT OF METHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF URTICA PILULIFERA L.
Abstract Description of the subject : The plant species Urtica pilulifera is widely distributed in the Mediterranean basin and North Africa. It shows numerous beneficial pharmacological effects (anti-asthmatic, astringent, diuretic, hemostatic and anti-inflammatory). Objectives : This study aims to evaluate the in-vitro antioxidant effect of methanolic extracts of fruits (F.E) and leaves (L.E) of Urtica pilulifera, and to estimate its phenolic and flavonoid content. Methods: Total phenolic and flavonoid content were estimated by Folin-Ciocalteau’s reagent and Aliminium chloride colorimetric method, respectively. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by using DPPH and reducing power assays. Results and discussion : The total polyphenol and flavonoid content of this extracts was found to be 51,47 or 76,88 µg/mg gallic acid equivalent and 2,78 or 3,60 µg/mg quercetin equivalent, for F.E and L.E respectively. Both extracts showed weak radical scavenging activity against the free radical DPPH compared to the synthetic antioxidant (BHA), with IC50 value of 239.41 and 80.6 μg/ml for L.E and F.E respectively. Moreover, the extracts exerted a fairly effective reducing power in comparison with the antioxidant used as a reference (BHT). Conclusion : These findings require further, more in-depth studies in order to assess the antioxidant power of Urtica pilulifera. Keywords : Antioxidant, Polyphenol, Flavonoid, Urtica pilulifera.

Antioxidant properties and total phenolic contents of Asperula hirsuta extracts.
The current study aimed to determine the phenolic contents and antioxidant properties of methanol (Met. E) and aqueous (Aq. E) extracts of Asperula hirsuta. Met. E showed the highest levels of polyphenols (144.68 ± 10.87 µg GAE/mg extract) and flavonoids (32.78 ± 2.06 µg QE/mg extract). Both extracts exhibited potent scavenging activity with IC50 values of 19.54 ± 1.60 μg/mL and 42.14 ± 0.57 μg/mL, respectively. At 250 µg/mL, Aq. E exerted stronger chelating effect (97%) than Met. E (86%). However, Met. E antioxidant capacity (169.01 ± 13.25 μg AAE/mg extract) was more than that of Aq. E (125.84 ± 07.12 μg AAE/mg extract). Both extracts protected from β-carotene bleaching by 61% and 66%, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that Asperula hirsuta extracts may serve as a promising source of natural antioxidants.

In vitro anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities of n- Butanol Extract from Indigenous Algerian Ficus
Exploring natural products for their potential health benefits has increased interest in the phytochemical properties of various species extracts. This study investigates the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the n-butanol extract from an endemic Algerian ficus, prepared from the dried ficus plant and subjected to various in vitro assays to evaluate its biological activities[1]. The antibacterial activity they assessed using the well-diffusion method in DMSO, against a panel of gram-positive and three gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Morganelle morganii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The extract demonstrated significant antibacterial activity, particularly against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The membrane stabilizing activity of n-butanol extract was evaluated by using hypotonic solution-induced human erythrocyte hemolysis[2], and the results showed a 100% inhibition at 3 mg/mL and 2mg/ml in comparison with 96.54 ± 2.14% observed with diclofenac in tested doses. The Antioxidant activity was evaluated using a DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay[3]. The n-butanol extract exhibited strong DPPH radical scavenging activity with 84.13% at 0.5 mg/ml with an IC50 value of 0.218 mg/ml, indicating its potential as a natural antioxidant. The results suggest that the n-butanol extract from ficus species possesses potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it a promising candidate for further development in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

Anti-edematous and Anti-lipid peroxidation properties of Methanolic extracts of Urtica pilulifera L
The plant species Urtica pilulifera is widely distributed in the Mediterranean basin and North Africa. It shows numerous beneficial pharmacological effects (anti-asthmatic, astringent, diuretic, hemostatic and anti-inflammatory). The present study is devoted to analyze the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of methanolic extracts of fruits (F.E) and leaves (L.E) of Urtica pilulifera, by carrying out linoleic acid peroxidation and ear edema induced by croton oil tests that highlight the presence of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substances, such as flavonoids and polyphenols. The obtained results showed that both extracts considerably inhibited the oxidation of linoleic acid with percentages of 77% and 74% for L.E and F.E respectively. Similarly, the local treatment of mice with 2mg/ear of L.E or F.E, inhibited ear inflammation induced by croton oil with 75% and 86% respectively. These values are better than those obtained with indomethacin (74%), used as reference. These findings showed that Urtica pilulifera extracts possess strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential and represent an important source of bioactive compounds which support the traditional medicinal use of this plant. So, this plant might be exploited as a potential source of natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents for pharmaceutical and food applications.

In vitro evaluation of antioxidant activity of Capparis Spinosa buds extract
Capparis spinosa is used in phytomedicine around the world as an antihyperglycemic, antihepatotoxic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic. Numerous bioactive phytochemical constituents have been isolated and identified from different parts of Capparis spinosa which are responsible for its various pharmacological activities. This study was carried out to determine the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Capparis spinosa buds using the DPPH free radical, metal chelating, linoleic acid peroxidation and reducing power assays. The total polyphenol, flavonoid and tannin content of the methanolic extract was found to be 51.12 ± 3.12 µg/mg gallic acid equivalent, 22.71 ± 0.48 µg/mg quercetin equivalent and 38.69 ± 2.32 µg/mg tannic acid equivalent, respectively. The methanolic extract showed a good free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 191.33 ± 6.50 μg/ml. In addition, the extract showed a good concentration-dependent chelating activity. Moreover, the extract at 50 µg/ml inhibited strongly (78%) linoleic acid peroxidation. Whereas, methanolic extract exerted a strong concentration-dependent reducing power with IC50 of 78.95 ± 2.00 μg/ml. The present study demonstrated that Capparis spinosa possesses high phenolic content, known to be associated with antioxidant capacity. These findings suggest its potential as a natural source of antioxidants.

The anti-inflammatory potential of Anacyclus clavatus acetonic extract in vivo and in vitro.
Current anti-inflammatory therapeutics, including both steroidal and non-steroidal agents, exhibit limitations in efficacy and tolerability. This has spurred investigation into alternative treatments, with a particular focus on natural products with potential anti-inflammatory properties. The current study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of acetonic extract of Anacyclus clavatus using xylene-induced ear edema in mice and human erythrocyte membrane stability method. The oral treatment of mice with 200 mg/kg of acetonic extract reduced the ear edema by 75%. This value was higher than that of indomethacin (70%). On the other hand, the acetonic extract inhibited the erythrocytes hemolysis by 99% against 80% exerted by diclofenac, used as reference. These results indicate the possibility to use the extract of Anacyclus clavatus as a source of anti-inflammatory agents.

Anti-hemolytic and Antioxidant properties of Ethyl acetate extract of Arbutus unedo L
The plant species Arbutus unedo L. is widely distributed in the Mediterranean basin and North Africa. It shows numerous beneficial pharmacological effects (antiseptic, antidiabetic, antidiarrheal, antioxidant, antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory). The present study is devoted to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the ethyl acetate extract from the leaves of Arbutus unedo L. using OH•, H2O2, O•-2 and AAPH-induced erythrocyte oxidative hemolysis assays. Results showed that the ethyl acetate extract exhibited a free radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 323.45 µg/ml, 38.40 µg/ml and 11.56 µg/ml, in OH•, O•- 2 and H2O2 tests, respectively. Moreover, the extract showed a high protective effect on erythrocyte hemolysis induced by AAPH, with half time hemolysis (HT50) of 122.02 min at 40 µg/ml. These findings showed that Arbutus unedo leaf extract possess strong antioxidant potential. So, this plant might be exploited as a potential source of natural antioxidant agents for pharmaceutical and food applications.

Chemical composition and biological activities of the Algerian Cymbalaria muralis aerial parts
In the present study we report data about antioxidant (DPPH, β-Carotene, reducing power), anti-inflammatory (xylene-induced ear oedema in mice (76 ± 1.0%) and membrane stabilisation (100%)) and antimicrobial (Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Pseudomonas arugenosa ATCC27853 and Fusarium oxysporum ATCC62506) activities of the ethanolic extract from the Algerian Cymbalaria muralis P. Gaertn., B. Mey. & Scherb (CME). The LC-ESIMS analysis of CME chemical profile allowed to identify antirrhinoside (1), catalpol (2), linarioside (3), glucosyringic acid (4), angoroside C (5), apigenin 7-O-glucoside (6), acacetin 7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7), apigenin (8), chrysoeriol 7-rutinoside (9), diosmin (10) and linarin (11). The evaluated total phenolic and flavonoid contents support the biological activities.

Antihemolytic Activity of Ethyl Acetate and Butanolic Extracts of Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench
Oxidative stress is involved in apoptosis and cellular aging but also hemolytic anemia. The latter is an indicator of free radical damage to the red blood cell membrane, which antioxidants can help prevent. This study aimed to examine the antihemolytic activities of ethyl acetate and butanolic extracts from the aerial part of Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench against AAPH-induced hemolysis. The antihemolytic activity of the two extracts showed that pretreatment of human erythrocytes with various doses significantly reduced AAPH-induced hemolysis in a dose-dependent manner. The recorded HT50 value reached 185.58 ± 7.45 min and 138.50 ± 1.57 min for ethyl acetate and butanolic extracts at a concentration of 40 μg/ml, versus 52.30 ± 0.31 min for the control. These values are better than those obtained with Trolox (115.47 ± 0.41 min), used as a reference. Our results demonstrate that Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench attenuates AAPH-induced hemolysis and can be used to prevent and treat hemolytic anemias.

Phenolic Content and Antioxidant Activity of Algerian Caper Leaves (Capparis Spinosa L.)
Capparis spinosa, commonly known as the caper, is native to the Mediterranean region and is part of the Capparaceae family. It is used as a medicinal plant because it contains many biologically active phytochemicals, such as phenols, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids and saponins. This study was carried out to determine the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Capparis spinosa leaves using the DPPH free radical, metal chelating, linoleic acid peroxidation and reducing power assays. The total polyphenol, flavonoid and tannin content of the methanolic extract was found to be 102.87 ± 6.62 µg/mg gallic acid equivalent, 53.66 ± 2.72 µg/mg quercetin equivalent and 55.88 ± 4.20 µg/mg tannic acid equivalent, respectively. The methanolic extract showed a good free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 55.57 ± 3.66 μg/ml. In addition, the extract showed a good concentration-dependent chelating activity with IC50 of 45.72 ± 3.28. Moreover, the extract at 50 µg/ml inhibited strongly (80%) linoleic acid peroxidation. Whereas, methanolic extract exerted a strong concentration-dependent reducing power. These results revealed the high phenolic contents and the antioxidant potential of Capparis spinosa. Thus, our findings provide evidence that Capparis spinosa is a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Antioxidant Activity of Ethyl Acetate Extract of Arbutus Unedo L.
For the medicinal use, standardization of plant extracts is a necessity. This study aims to evaluate the in-vitro antioxidant effect of ethyl acetate extract prepared from leaves of an Algerian Arbutus unedo, and to estimate its phenolic and flavonoid content. Total phenolic and flavonoid content were estimated by Folin-Ciocalteau’s reagent and Aliminium chloride colorimetric method, respectively. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by using ABTS, peroxidation of linoleic acid and phosphomolybdate (PPM) assays. The total polyphenol and flavonoid content of this extract was found to be 1054, 81 ± 95,02 μg/mg gallic acid equivalent and 53,99 ± 5,33 μg/mg quercetin equivalent, respectively. Results showed that the ethyl acetate extract exhibited a strong free radical scavenging activity against the free radical ABTS with IC50 = 1.59 μg/ml which is better than that obtained with BHT (IC50 = 6.10 μg/ml) used as standard antioxidant. Moreover, the extract inhibited strongly the oxidation of linoleic acid with percentage of 89%. In addition, the extract showed a good reducing activity in phosphomolybdate test with a total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of 986.66 35.87 μg equivalent ascorbic acid/mg extract. These findings showed that the ethyl acetate extract of Arbutus unedo leaves possesses strong antioxidant potential, which may be attributed to the presence of high amount of polyphenolic phyto-constituents. So, this plant might be exploited for pharmaceutical and food applications as a potential source of effective antioxidant compounds to prevent the oxidative stress related diseases.

Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Ethyl Acetate and Butanolic Extracts of Arbutus unedo L.
The growing concern for the side effects and toxicity experienced with the use of currently available anti-inflammatory drugs makes it necessary to search for novel compounds. Medicinal plants provide a ready source of anti-inflammatory agents with minimal side effects. The present study is devoted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the ethyl acetate and butanolic extracts from the leaves of Arbutus unedo L. using croton oil-induced ear edema in mice and human red blood cell membrane stabilization method. Results showed that the topical application of 2 mg/ear of ethyl acetate or butanolic extract reduced the ear edema induced by croton oil with an inhibition of 74% and 66%, respectively. This value is better than those obtained with indomethacin, used as reference. On the other hand, the ethyl acetate and butanolic extracts inhibited the erythrocytes hemolysis by 96% and 97% respectively against 98% exerted by diclofenac. Our finding may indicate the possibility of using the extracts of Arbutus unedo L. to prevent the inflammatory processes.

LC-ESI/MS PROFILE OF ETHYL ACETATE EXTRACT OF HELICHRYSUM STOECHAS (L.) MOENCH.
Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench is a Mediterranean plant belong to the Asteraceae family. It showed many biological properties such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, as well as certain medicinal activities, including antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antiproliferative and antiallergic. This study was carried out to determine the phenolic content and the phytochemical composition of ethyl acetate extract from the aerial part of Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench. The total polyphenol and flavonoid content of ethyl acetate extract was found to be 589.65 ± 35.58 µg/mg gallic acid equivalent and 84.78 ± 8.07 µg/mg quercetin equivalent, respectively. Furthermore, by utilizing liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry method (LC-ESI/MS), a total of 18 phenolics were identified and quantified including 11 flavonoid compounds and 9 phenolic acids that were mostly predominated by ferulic acid, isoquercitrin, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, quercetin and quercetin 3-O-galactoside. This study provided information on the phytochemicals contained in Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench revealing the potential application of this plant as raw material for the phytotherapeutic and cosmetic industries.

FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING, REDUCING POWER AND LIPID PEROXIDATION INHIBITION OF ETHYL ACETATE EXTRACT OF ARBUTUS UNEDO L.
Medicinal plants provide a ready source of antioxidant agents with minimal side effects. Arbutus unedo L. is a plant frequently used in traditional folk medicine. The ethyl acetate extract of Arbutus unedo leaves were screened for antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was determined by using DPPH, ß-Carotene bleaching and reducing power assays. Results showed that the ethyl acetate extract exhibited a strong free radical scavenging activity against the free radical DPPH with IC50 = 3.43 μg/ml which is better than that obtained with BHT (IC50 = 8.21 μg/ml) used as standard antioxidant. Moreover, the extract inhibited strongly bleaching of b-carotene with a same percentage (92%) as BHT. In addition, the extract exerted a high concentration-dependent reducing power with an IC50 of 12,25 μg/ml . These findings may indicate the possibility of using the ethyl acetate extract of Arbutus unedo as an interesting source of effective antioxidant compounds to prevent the oxidative stress related diseases.

Excessive reactive oxygen species generation leading to oxidative stress in the biological system, has been implicated in the pathology of several human diseases. Recently, interest has increased considerably in finding naturally occurring antioxidants to replace synthetic antioxidants, which are being restricted due to their potential health risks and toxicity. This study was carried out to determine the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of aqueous extract of aerial part of Anacyclus clavatus using the DPPH free radical, metal chelating, linoleic acid peroxidation and reducing power assays. The total polyphenol, flavonoid and tannin content of the aqueous extract was found to be 79,06 ± 3,24 μg/mg gallic acid equivalent, 16,39 ± 1,38 μg/mg quercetin equivalent and 31,14 ± 2,27 μg/mg tannic acid equivalent, respectively. The aqueous extract showed a good free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 68,98 ± 1,64 μg/ml, while the IC50 value of the butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT), used as standard antioxidant was 44.36 ± 3.10 μg/ml. In addition, the extract showed a good concentration-dependent chelating activity with IC50 of 74,64 ± 11,68. Moreover, the extract at 50 μg/ml inhibited strongly (76%) linoleic acid peroxidation. Whereas, aqueous extract exerted a strong concentration-dependent reducing power. These results revealed the high phenolic contents and the antioxidant and free radical scavenging potential of Anacyclus clavatus. Thus, our findings provide evidence that Anacyclus clavatus is a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Oxidation is essential to many living organisms for the production of energy for biological activities. However, the uncontrolled production of reactive oxygen species is involved in the onset of many diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, aging and atherosclerosis. This study was carried out to determine the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts of Avena sativa seeds using the DPPH free radical and phosphomolybdenum assays. Phytochemical screening indicated that the methanolic extract contained more polyphenols (24,05 ± 1,73 μg GAE/mg extract) and flavonoids (0,52 ± 0,02 μg QE/mg extract) than the aqueous one. The radical-scavenging activity of the methanolic extract was significantly (p < 0.001) higher (IC50 = 549,88 ± 12,00 μg/mL) than that of the aqueous extract (IC50 = 1093,48 ± 54,58 μg/mL). These values are inferior to that of the standard BHT (IC50 = 13,54 ± 1,56 μg/mL). In addition, methanolic and aqueous extracts exerted a strong total antioxidant capacity with 45,05 ± 1,87 and 109,65 ± 4,75 μg VcE/mg extract, respectively. These results revealed the high phenolic contents and the antioxidant potential of Avena sativa. Thus, our findings provide evidence that Avena sativa is a potential source of natural antioxidants.

Total Phenolic Contents and Antioxidant Properties of Algerian Arbutus unedo L. Extracts
Arbutus unedo L. is a plant widely distributed in the Mediterranean basin and North Africa, frequently used in traditional folk medicine to treat diabetes and arterial hypertension. This study aims to evaluate the phenolic composition and antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate (EA.E) and n-butanolic (But.E) extracts prepared from leaves of Arbutus unedo. Total phenolic and flavonoids contents were determined spectrophotometrically. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH•, OH•, H2O2, O•-2, ß-carotene bleaching and AAPH-induced erythrocyte oxidative hemolysis assays. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids in both extracts. The high amount was observed in EA.E which exerted the stronger antioxidant effect, with IC50 values of 3.43 μg/mL, 323.45 μg/mL, 38.40 μg/mL and 11.56 μg/mL, in DPPH•, OH•, O•-2 and H2O2 tests, respectively. Both extracts inhibited β-carotene bleaching, but EA.E is always more potent (92%) than But.E (85%). Furthermore, the EA.E showed the highest protective effect on erythrocyte hemolysis induced by AAPH, with half time hemolysis (HT50) of 122.02 min at 40 μg/mL. Taken together, this study showed that Arbutus unedo leaf extracts possess strong antioxidant potential, which may be attributed to the presence of a high amount of polyphenolic constituents. So, this plant might be exploited as a potential source of natural antioxidant agents for pharmaceutical and food applications.

Phytochemical analysis, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench extracts
This work aimed at investigating the phenolic composition, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of ethyl acetate (EAE) and butanolic (BuE) extracts obtained from the aerial parts of Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench. EAE extract showed the highest levels of polyphenols (589.65 ± 35.58 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoids (84.78 ± 8.07 mg QE/g extract). The LC-ESI-MS results indicate various vital phenolics, including isoquercitrin, rutin, ferulic acid and chlorogenic acid. The EAE and BuE extracts (2 mg/ear) exhibited a significant inhibition (p < 0.001) of croton oil-induced ear œdema by 86% and 64%, respectively, and they reduced significantly (p < 0.001) the number of infiltrating leukocytes by 84% and 66% of inhibition, respectively. These extracts inhibited significantly (p < 0.001) the protein denaturation and stabilised the erythrocytes membrane. Besides, both extracts exerted antioxidant effect by scavenging hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anion radicals. Moreover, they exerted a significant protective effect (p < 0.001) against AAPH-induced erythrocyte hemolysis. At 40 μg/mL, the half hemolysis times were 185.58 ± 7.45 and 138.50 ± 1.57 min, respectively. These values are better than those obtained with Trolox (115.47 ± 0.41 min), used as a reference. Results from this study suggest that H. stoechas may represent a prospective source of natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents.

Anti-inflammatory activity of methanolic extracts of Urtica pilulifera L.
Urtica pilulifera L. is a very common herb used in folk medicine to alleviate inflammation and arthritis. These effects are exerted by a mixture of secondary metabolites present in different parts of the plant. The present study is devoted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the methanolic extract of the aerial part (APE), fruits (FE) and leaves (LE) of this plant using carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats. Edema was induced by injecting λ carrageenan (1%) into the sub-plantar region in rats. The extracts were given orally one hour before λ carrageenan injection. Two doses (200 and 400 mg /kg) of the extract and one dose of aspirin (200 mg /kg) an anti-inflammatory standard were used. Paw volume was measured on alternate hours up to 6 hours. Results showed that orally pretreatment of rats with 200 or 400 mg/kg of APE prevents significantly the paw edema induced by carrageenan from 3th hour with an inhibition of 82 % and 79 % respectively and these inhibitions were statistically similar to that of aspirin (83%). For these same doses, the FE exerts a dose dependent effect and inhibits edema with a percentage of 66% and 74% respectively. While, the LE prevent paw edema with an inhibition of 62% for the two used doses. This study supports the traditional use of Urtica pilulifera L for the treatment of inflammatory disorders and rheumatoid arthritis.

Synthesis, spectral characterization, DFT computational studies and inhibitory activity of novel N2S2 tetradentates Schiff bases on metallo-beta-lactamases of Acinetobacter baumannii
Tetradentates N2S2 Schiff base ligands H2L1 and H2L2 were synthesized respectively from orthophenylenediamine and 1,3-diaminopropane which were condensed on thioacetic acid in ethanolic solutions. These synthesized chelating agents were structurally characterized by the routine physicochemical methods such as FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR, molar conductance and UVeVis spectrophotometry. The both Schiff bases H2L1 and H2L2 were used as inhibitors agents towards the metallo-beta-lactamases enzymes (MBLs). These enzymes were extracted from Acinetobacter baumannii. It revealed that they have a significant inhibitory effect basing on their IC50 values, compared to the standard inhibitor like EDTA. Accordingly, these ligands were found to be efficient inhibitors towards MBLs activity. Molecular structures of the obtained compounds with their electronic properties were also investigated using density functional theory (DFT) via B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) method. The essential results obtained from this method have been found to be in good correlation with the decreasing of the energetic gap values (HOMO, LUMO) seeing that as these gap values of H2L1 and H2L2 decrease, their IC50 decrease. As a consequence, the resulting inhibitory effects become consequently increased.

Free Radical Scavenging, Reducing power and Lipid Peroxidation Inhibition of Butanolic extract of Plantago lanceolata
This study aims to evaluated the in-vitro antioxidant capacity of the butanolic extract of the aerial part of plantago lanceolata; an Algerian traditional plant medicinal, and to estimate its phenolic and flavonoid content. Total phenolic and flavonoid content was estimated by Folin-Ciocalteau’s reagent and Aliminium chloride colorimetric method, respectively. The antioxidant activity was determined by using DPPH, linoleic acid peroxidation and reducing power assays. The total polyphenol, flavonoid content of the butanolic extract was found to be 189,04 ±19,69 µg/mg gallic acid equivalent, 10,50 ± 0,67 µg/mg quercetin equivalent, respectively. Results showed that the butanolic extract exhibited high antiradical activity against the free radical DPPH with IC50 of 29,07 ± 1,48 μg/ml. while the IC50 value of the butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT), used as standard antioxidant was 8,21 ± 0,12 μg/ml. Moreover, the extract at 50µg/ml inhibited strongly (83%) linoleic acid peroxidation. In addition, the extract exerted a good concentration-dependent reducing power with IC50 of 31,43 ± 0,94 μg/ml . These findings suggest that butanolic extract of Plantago lanceolata possess a strong antioxidant activity and may be considered as an interesting source of effective antioxidant compounds, justifying its use in folklore medicine.

Free Radical Scavenging, Reducing power and Lipid Peroxidation Inhibition of Ethyl acetate extract of Plantago lanceolata

Moreover, the extract at 50µg/ml inhibited strongly (81%) linoleic acid peroxidation. In addition, the extract exerted a good concentration-dependent reducing power with IC50 of 68,83 ± 0,88 μg/ml . These findings suggest that ethyle acetate extract of Plantago lanceolata possess a strong antioxidant activity and may be considered as an interesting source of effective antioxidant compounds, justifying its use in folklore medicine.

Phenolic content, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of Anacyclus clavatus extracts
The anti-inflammatory and the antioxidant activities of methanol (ME) and aqueous (AE) extracts of Anacyclus clavatus were evaluated. Phenolic constituents in the extracts were screened. Croton oil-induced ear edema in mice, carrageenan-induced paw edema and pleurisy in rats were evoked. The antioxidant effect was tested by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, ion chelating, lipid peroxidation tests. Both extracts are rich in phenolic compounds. The application of 2 mg per ear of ME or AE inhibited ear edema by 84 and 83 %, respectively. The oral treatment of rats with 200 or 400 mg kg–1 of ME reduced paw edema by 64 and 74%, respectively, whereas the inhibition by AE was by 65 and 80%, respectively. At 400 mg kg–1, the extracts decreased exudation and neutrophil migration into the pleural cavity by 64 and 66%, respectively, while the inhibition by AE was 42 and 55%, respectively. On the other hand, ME exerted scavenging activity higher than AE, while the AE chelating activity was more than that of ME. However, both extracts had similar inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation. In general, A. clavatus may be used as a source of anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant agents.

Anti-inflammatory activity of aqueous extract of Hertia cheirifolia
Hertia cherifolia is traditionally used in Algeria and Tunisia to treat various inflammatory affections. The present study investigates the anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous extract of Hertia cherifolia leaves. The xylene-induced ear edema in mice and carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats were used as acute inflammatory models. Results showed thant aqueous extract was rich in polyphenols and flavonoids; 54,58 µg/mg Gallic acid equivalent and 3,48 µg/mg Quercetin equivalent respectively. The topical application of 2 mg/ear of this extract produced a significant inhibition (48%) of xylene-induced ear swilling in mice. This inhibition is similar to that obtained with indomethacin (52%), used as reference. Moreover, the oral treatment of rats with 200 or 400 mg/kg of aqueous extract prevented significantly the paw edema induced by carrageenan with a maximal inhibition of 61.57 % and 71.98 % at 6h, respectively. These inhibitions were similar to that of aspirin used as standard anti-inflammatory agent. These results indicate that aqueous extract of Hertia cherifolia possess a strong anti-inflammatory activity and may be considered as an interesting source of effective anti-inflammatory compounds, justifying its use in folklore medicine.

Anti-inflammatory activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts of Plantago lanceolata
Plantago lanceolata L. is a very common herb traditionally used throughout the world for their antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. These effects are exerted by a mixture of secondary metabolites present in different parts of the plant. The present study is devoted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the methanolic and aqueous extracts of the aerial part of this plant using carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and croton oil-induced ear edema in mice. Results showed that orally pretreatment of rats with 200 or 400 mg/kg of aqueous extract prevents significantly the paw edema induced by carrageenan from 4th hour with an inhibition of 82 % and 84 % respectively. These inhibitions were similar to that of aspirin used as an anti-inflammatory standard. With the same doses, the methanolic extract exerts anti-edematous effect with an inhibition of 67% and 54% respectively. On the other hand, the topical application of 2 mg/ear of aqueous or methanolic extract reduced the ear edema induced by croton oil with an inhibition of 77% and 89%, respectively. These values are better than those obtained with indomethacin, used as reference. Our results indicate the possibility of using the extracts of Plantago lanceolata L. to prevent the inflammatory processes.

Effet of the methanolic Extract of Hertia cheirifolia (I.) on Acute and Sub-Chronic Inflammations
Hertia cherifolia L. is traditionally used in Northern Africa to treat various Inflammatory affections. The present study was aimed to screen the methanolic extract of Hertia cherifolia (HC) leaves for anti-inflammatory potential. The croton oil-induced ear oedema in mice and carrageenan-induced paw oedema in rats were used as acute inflammatory models. Cotton pallet induced-granuloma in rats and carrageenan-induced air pouch in mice were conducted as sub-chronic models. Acute toxicity test was carried out to fix the safe doses of the plant extract. Results showed that the plant extract up to 2000 mg/kg body weight did not produce any toxic effect or death. The topical application of 2mg/ear of Hertia cherifolia methanolic produced a significant inhibition (78.7%) of coton oil-induced ear swilling in mice. Moreover, the oral treatment of rats by plant extract inhibited the paw oedema in a dose dependent manner and exerted a potent anti-inflammatory action on granuloma inhibiting wet weight and dry weight of cotton pallet 15.24 % and 23.25 % respectively. On the other hand, an inhibitory activity of leucocytes migration was also observed in the murine air pouch. The treatment by 2mg/ml of methanolic extract of Hertia cherifolia decreased significantly the number of leucocytes in the pouch (62.4%). In conclusion, the methanolic extract of Hertia cherifolia possess a strong anti-inflammatory activity and may be considered as an interesting source of effective anti-inflammatory compounds, justifying its use in folklore medicine.

Polyphenols, flavonoids and anti-inflammatory activity of Anacyclus clavatus extracts
Medicinal plants provide a ready source of anti-inflammatory compounds with minimal side effects. Polyphenols and flavonoids have a potential for new anti-inflammatory agents. The current study aimed to determine the total polyphenol and flavonoid content of the methanolic and aqueous extract from the aerial part of Anacyclus clavatus using Folin-Ciocalteu and Aliminium chloride methods, respectively and to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of these extracts by using two models of acute inflammation, carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats and croton oil-induced ear edema in mice. Results showed that methanolic extract was rich in polyphenols with 131.30 ± 6.88 µg/mg gallic acid equivalent, while the aqueous extract was rich in flavonoids with 16.39 ± 1.38 µg/mg quercetin equivalent. Oral pretreatment of rats with 200 or 400 mg/kg of methanolic extract prevented significantly the paw edema induced by carrageenan, with a maximal inhibition of 64% and 74% at 6h, respectively. These inhibitions were similar to that of aspirin used as a standard anti-inflammatory agent. At the same doses (200 or 400 mg/kg) and after 6 h of edema induction, the aqueous extract exerted also anti-edematous effect with an inhibition of 80% and 65%, respectively. At 200 mg/kg, the inhibition is better than that obtained with aspirin. On the other hand, the topical application of 2 mg/ear of methanolic or aqueous extract reduced the ear edema induced by croton oil at 6 h by 83%. This inhibition is better than that obtained with indomethacin, used as reference. These results indicate the possibility to use the extracts of Anacyclus clavatus to prevent the inflammatory processes.

Anti-inflammatory effects of Anacyclus clavatus extracts on carrageenan-induced pleurisy in rats
Plant drugs have been the major source for treatment of several diseases for a long time. Anacyclus clavatus is a common herb traditionally used to treat different pathologies, including inflammatory diseases. This study was conducted to investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of methanolic and aqueous extract from the aerial part of Anacyclus clavatus using carrageenan-induced pleurisy in rats, as model of acute inflammation. Oral pretreatment of rats with 400 mg/kg of methanolic and aqueous extract of Anacyclus clavatus produced a significant reduction of exudate volume in the pleural cavity with 64% and 55%, respectively. Moreover after 4 h of inflammation induction, polymorphonuclear leukocytes migrated into the pleural cavity were inhibited by 66% and 42%, respectively. These results provide a scientific basis that justifies the traditional use of Anacyclus clavatus in the treatment of inflammatory disorders.

Phenolic content and antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Anacyclus clavatus
Reactive oxygen species are well known to be cytotoxic and have been implicated in the etiology of a wide array of human diseases. Several studies are interesting in phytochemicals as new sources of natural antioxidants in order to replace synthetic antioxidants, which are being restricted due to their potential health risks and toxicity. This study was carried out to determine the phenolic content and the antioxidant activity of methanolic extract of Anacyclus clavatus using the DPPH free radical, linoleic acid peroxidation and reducing power assays. The total polyphenol, flavonoid and tannin content of the methanolic extract was found to be 131.30 ± 6.88 μg/mg gallic acid equivalent, 9.96 ± 0.43 μg/mg quercetin equivalent and 39.21 ± 6.55 μ g/mg tannic acid equivalent, respectively. The methanolic extract showed a good free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value of 28.30 ± 3.45 μ g/ml, while the IC50 value of the butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT), used as standard antioxidant was 44.36 ± 3.10 ?g/ml. In addition, the extract at 50 μg/ml inhibited strongly (76%) linoleic acid peroxidation. Moreover, the extract exerted a strong concentration-dependent reducing power. These results revealed the high phenolic contents and the antioxidant and free radical scavenging potential of Anacyclus clavatus. Thus, our findings provide evidence that Anacyclus clavatus is a potential source of natural antioxidants.
